Job Opening: Produce Manager
Greene Grape Provisions, located in two adjacent storefronts on Fulton Street in Fort Greene, provides the best quality gourmet groceries to our Brooklyn neighborhood. We offer locally sourced organic produce, farmstead & artisanal cheeses and charcuterie, ethically-sourced meats and fish from our whole animal butcher and fishmonger, along with house-made prepared foods and tasty sandwiches. The Produce Department at Greene Grape Provisions should provide customers with a solid selection of staple, seasonal, and local produce. Following our buying guidelines of sourcing quality products, the Produce Department Manager is responsible for ordering and selecting products, as well as maintaining correct inventory and stock levels. They must be attentive to detail, able to manage Produce Department staff, knowledgeable of best ways to procure and maintain fresh produce, and provide the best product and service to customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Source quality produce from local purveyors and wholesalers
- Purchase produce based on our sourcing policies; quality of produce from different farms; customer needs and requests
- Rotate produce selection based on seasonality and availability to keep customers interested and excited
- Set all pricing based on cost of goods, following guidelines for department margins and expected sales goals
- Update POS system with correct item and pricing with each invoice, educating cashiers to ensure produce is properly sold at registers—either by communicating in person or through emails
- Actively work to reducing waste by maintaining tight controls on ordering, rotating stock, and aggressively training staff on how to maintain produce at optimal levels
- Accept department deliveries and check in all items; check for quality and correct quantities, and send back items that aren’t up to standards
- Monitor and oversee maintenance of displays, considering appearance, variety and merchandising ease of shopping and stocking
- Maintain accurate and attractive signage for all items
- Ensure staff are providing helpful, friendly and educated customer service
- Work with management team to address customer suggestions, comments, & complaints
- Pull produce off the floor that is no longer sellable
- Ensure produce storage areas are clean, organized, properly labeled and in good working order
- Assist in packing out herbs, salads & cutting fruit
- Work as a team with other departments and counters to provide assistance when needed
- Maintain food safety and sanitation standards as defined by both the handbook and by the DOA
- Demonstrate outstanding customer service to every customer and contribute to a positive work environment
Requirements
- Working knowledge of popular herbs, vegetables, and fruits
- Previous experience in a comparable environment
- Detail oriented with excellent organizational & communication skills
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk up/down stairs, use hand truck, and lift up to 50 lbs unassisted
- Flexible availability including nights, weekends and holidays
- Aptitude in decision-making and problem-solving
- Have an excellent work ethic and willingness to learn
- Great customer service and communication skills
- Ability to self-manage time and prioritize tasks
- Proof of Covid-19 vaccination
