Berry Exciting Summer Sips

That bead of sweat lining your face mask does not lie: It is now peak summer, which means that it's also peak picnic AND peak berry season in the U.S. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has even designated July National Blueberry Month in celebration of the nation's most popular berry.

Now, blueberries are famous for being compact powerhouses of nutrition and flavor that travel well in picnic baskets, but did you also know that they are also naturally high in pectin? This makes them awesome for baking, making preserves, and—most importantly to us at Wine & Spirits—booze! Indeed, the practice of making wines and beers flavored with wild blueberries dates back thousands of years, and shows no signs of slowing. Looking to make this "berry" exciting tradition part of your socially responsible picnicking plan this summer? Here are some ideas to get you started:

RETHINKER Dry Hopped Blueberry Mead: Old school meets new school in this blueberry flavored honey wine made with Cascade and Columbus hops from Indiana's New Day Craft. Available in 12 oz cans, the mead is expertly balanced with notes of hops, honey, and blueberries with a dry, refreshing finish.

DUCKWALK Blueberry Port: Port wine lovers rejoice! This potent port-style wine is made on at Duckwalk Vineyards on Long Island from Maine blueberries and is brimming with flavor. Delicious on its own, combined with 3/4 oz brandy, 3/4 oz lemon juice & 1/2 oz simple syrup in a St. Charles Punch or even as a topper for ice cream!
