Spicy Delicious: Q&A with Sutta Saraphum

SD Sauce brings the heat and flavor, earning its reputation as one of the best hot sauces in our store, which is why we couldn’t not feature it in our hot sauce favorites. Made and bottled in Long Island City, SD Sauce begins with Thai Bird’s Eye chili and lime juice, with plenty of other fresh ingredients like cilantro and lots of garlic. Classic SD Sauce gets its undercurrent of umami from fish sauce, while the Ginger Vegan sauce is, of course, packed with fresh ginger. We just can’t get enough, which is why we had to ask SD Sauce founder Sutta Saraphum all about her incredible sauces.

What inspired the founding of SD Sauce?

When I arrived in the United States in 2011, I had a difficult time finding the authentic tastes and flavors like from where I grew up in Thailand. I love to cook and always share my foods with friends and family. I always received positive compliments on my cooking, especially my sauces. So with the love and encouragement of my friends and family, SD Sauce was born.

What's something you'd like people to know about your hot sauce or your business, but don't always get to mention?

I put a lot of love and passion into every batch of sauce I make. When I see how much people enjoy my products, when I receive good compliments, it gives me so much more energy and passion to drive me to expand and share to a larger community.

What's the best part of being a Brooklyn hot sauce maker?

I started my company in Brooklyn because of the diverse population that creates a lot of opportunities and open doors for new entrepreneurs, especially for women.

What's your favorite SD Sauce product?

It's a difficult question for me to pick one over the other. I love and crave both flavors because I created two of the best flavors and I use them both daily.
